The Australian Communities Gallery is a gallery space to house short temporary exhibitions by local and immigrant communities. It was designed to represent the Australian home taking elements from the traditional fibro house of the 1950’s and juxtapose that with highly utilized elements of modern Australian architecture such as the timber slatted screen. The gallery had many criteria but the most important was that it had to be constructed for flexibility using durable materials.

We ensured that every aspect of the space had a degree of flexibility, for example the sliding glass panels can be used to create a showcase in the recess of the main wall or they can be stacked away to expose a recess for hanging art or be graphically treated. We also incorporated two large sliding panels that could be relocated anywhere along the main wall which could be utilized for graphics, theme panels or additional hanging space.
