The design concept for "IWA japanese dining room" was drawn from the traditional art of cooking over charcoal and fire juxtaposed with the cool underwater home of fish, the main staple of the japanese diet. We tried to evoke this contrast through the use of sawn timber and copper against the shiny black surfaces and smooth slate.

All of the furniture and light fittings were custom built for IWA and designed by Maria Briganti of Oblong. We approached this project sustainably trying to re-use many elements we found in the space, such as the oak paneling, which we screen printed with fish to incorporate it into the language of the rest of the space. The log seats, camping lanterns and Australian glazed clay bricks were also sustainable choices we made that became effective design decisions. Situated at 380 Victoria road, Chatswood.
